Out of focus...

{Sometimes I get over excited about a photos potential and forget to let my Yashica Samurai focus properly, oops.}

Over the weekend I've been reading through the 'Thing's I'm afraid to tell you posts' and I'm feeling conflicted about it - in many ways, I'm so glad that people are being honest but at the same time I'm amazed that people really believe that other bloggers lifes are that perfect...

I don't share my feelings often here, but it's not because I'm afraid, or worried that you'll judge me - I already judge myself too harshly and if I don't share something here, its usually because I'm hiding it from myself rather than a larger audience. I know that I am my own worst enemy.

My photos today are technically bad - they are out of focus, you can't make out what you are looking at and at first I was disappointed with them. But after looking at them again, I think that they are beautiful, they remind me to slow down, appreciate the moment, stop being so hard on myself to take the perfect photo and to just wait a few more seconds to let myself enjoy it, let the camera and light do its thing and then, when I'm ready, take the photo.

I think we all need this reminder sometimes - perfection, happiness, wealth and beauty are all relative - what works for me won't work for you - and thats how blogging is too - read a blog because you love it but know (and remember) that behind every amazing photo there is always one (maybe more) that is out of focus too.

I love out of focus photos, and I'm so happy to have found another great film photography blog to read. (Plus, it's not just straight photography—you also blog about life and other bits.) Like I mentioned a couple of times before, we are more than just our blogs. They are just one representation of ourselves. Thanks for sharing—you've inspired me to pull my film cameras back out!

These photos ARE beautiful! They look like paintings.. Often when we produce something that we deem "a mistake", it's actually more interesting or intriguing than if everything had gone exactly as we'd intended. It's only through the process of making mistakes that we discover new things about our process or ourselves. I try and remind myself of this often :)

I, myself often berate myself for being too open and honest (after all it is online for all and anyone to see…)
This challenge showed me that essentially we are all the same. It's incredible how alike we all really are.
p.s. Thank you for reminding me that there is beauty to be found in imperfection too xox

Okay, I promise I'm not just saying this to suck up or anything, because I know sometimes you're afraid people aren't being honest about your photography skills.. but I HONESTLY really like this, out of focus and all. Sure, you didn't let it focus and you got snap happy - understandable..
I LOVE the grain, I'm crazy about grain.. and I think they're beautifully imperfect. Gah, I love them. Okay, I'm done.

these are great shots, even in their "dysfunction." It's what gives them their beauty. I have to constantly remind myself that perfection and beauty are not equal to happiness and truth. And also to let go when taking pictures (especially with film!)

I really like that idea but it's hard for me to remember when it comes time to put words in my blog posts because I want to be better than I really am, but I'm not always.

What a wonderful post! Both: the pictures and your words!

Thanks for sharing it!

Beautifully said! Really love this an analogy... also your photos are beautiful. (And make me feel better about all the fuzzy ones I took at Loch Ness recently... was so disappointed when they came out like that at first.)

Well said Rhianne, and absolutely beautiful photos. Most people and things are imperfect, but that's what makes them all so special. No one ever invented anything new by being perfect and never making a few mistakes. xx

perhaps the beauty is in the imperfection, it certainly is in these photos. these are absolutely lovely! as far as the honesty posts, i think it's a great push towards transparency in blogging which is a positive thing, but it can feel a bit forced or contrived sometimes with movements like these which can have the opposite effect (if that makes sense). the thing i love about your photos is that they're organic. they just happened and that's what makes them special. happy accidents, if you will :)
